Vic: Coroner recommends review of crossings
A Victorian coroner has recommended a review of railway crossing safety .. following
a train and car crash which killed three people in Melbourne's west.
ROLANDO ANTONIO .. LILIA ANTONIO and SANDRA MUAREMI .. died instantly when their car
was hit by a train at suburban St Albans after 6am on August 5 .. 2004.
Earlier there'd been a collision just metres from the crossing .. resulting in traffic
slowing down.
Coroner GRAEME JOHNSTONE said for some reason .. Mr ANTONIO .. whose car straddled
the track .. didn't respond urgently to the oncoming train.
He recommended road and rail safety authorities look at the safety design of high-risk
railway crossing .. and continue an education campaign warning drivers of risky behaviour
and their legal responsibilities.
MERLIN MUAREMI .. whose mother SANDRA was killed .. said more should have been done
to secure the area following the first smash.
He was also disappointed no blame was directly attributed in the finding.
